In Indiana that is Porter, Lake and LaPorte counties, including Valparaiso, Chesterton, Portage, Crown Point, Merrillville, Hobart, Michigan City and La Porte. In Michigan it is Berrien, Van Buren and Cass counties, including St. Joseph, Benton Harbor, New Buffalo, Three Oaks, Niles and Watervliet. For larger jobs we travel further.

Up to 60 degrees. We use a remote-controlled Green Climber tracked mower, so the operator stands safely off the hillside and controls the machine from level ground. That removes the rollover risk that stops a conventional tractor or skid steer, which is why bluffs, dune faces, levees, pond banks and highway embankments are routine work for us rather than jobs we turn down.

Saplings and stems up to about 4 inches in diameter, along with heavy underbrush, multiflora rose, autumn olive, honeysuckle and similar overgrowth. Anything larger than that generally needs to come out first, and we can tell you quickly whether a property falls inside or outside that range.

No, and that is deliberate. Everything is mulched in place down to ground cover. There is no burn pile, no chipping, no dump fees and no trailer loads leaving the property. The mulch layer that is left behind holds soil on slopes and slows regrowth, and the site is usable the same day.

Every property is different, so an accurate number requires looking at the site. The factors that move the price are predictable: how steep the ground is, how thick and how large the growth is, how far the machine has to travel from where it can unload, and whether anything has to leave the site. Light field and pasture mowing sits at the low end, and heavy brush with 3 to 4 inch stems on a steep grade sits at the high end. Recurring maintenance after a first cut is always cheaper than the first cut. Tell us the acreage and roughly what is growing and we can usually give you a workable range over the phone.

Weight and reach. The machine weighs about 2,800 pounds, roughly a third of a skid steer, so it exerts far less ground pressure and is much less likely to rut soft ground such as a pond bank. It is also low profile and remote controlled, so it works on grades and in tight spots between mature trees where a conventional machine cannot safely go. On flat, open, dry ground a bush hog is often the right tool. On slopes, soft ground and awkward terrain, it usually is not.
